Move In Day

Disclosure: My suitemates and I made a pact of confidentiality today. We wanted to create an environment of safety, respect, and openness without judgment or worry. Because of this, ALL the names of people will be changed, and the details of dire or especially difficult situations might be changed as well.

I can sum up move in day in three words: HOT AND HUMID. It was around 100 degrees, blasting sun, thick soupy air, and boxes to move in. Needless to say I definitely sweated. Then, in the afternoon, it rained intensely. So, how did my first day go? Amazing.

I met my roomate as we moved in, and I showed off my intelligence. Which means, I panicked when my clock read 52:11 (that's not even Army time!!)...it was upside down, and it actually said 11:25. Good start. I also now have a lofted bed, and I thought I was going to die by rolling out the bed. But, I made it through the night, so the loft stays.

                                                    (Living dangerously, with no rail!)

We ate lunch, did some more unpacking, had a suite meeting where we introduced ourselves, and then the official welcome. They talked about the college's history (it's actually pretty cool), about the freedom and responsibility of our education, about the importance of honesty, hard work, and about making a difference. My mother cried because I am standing at the threshold of my life. I get to choose all my classes. I get to define myself in the context of my community and my world. I get to make solid differences in the world around me. So my mother cried, and I was both terrified and excited about the person I was going to become in the next four years.

I said goodbye to mother soon after that. And I cried, because I was blessed with a mother that I both loved AND liked. It was wonderful, so I was heartbroken to say goodbye. But, I will see her during Family weekend, and I have Skype and my phone and all of that. So, see you later, not goodbye, remember?

I then went to my orientation groups. We played a game where we tossed a ball that was full of either/or questions. Personal favorite? Backstreet Boys or N*Sync. Just putting it out there, BSB totally trumps Non*Sync. BLEGH. (If you don't believe me, the next two links will be end all be all arguments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fndeDfaWCg&ob=av2e and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj6FCKm8dhM&ob=av2n)

Then, it happened. Torrential rain. My hair was straight. I wasn't going to win. So, I ran into the rain. Hair ruined. Made it to my faculty advisor meeting. So it goes.

Then, afterwards, we went to the professor's house, where I had the BEST damn quiche I have ever had. Seriously. And I hate quiche. To get to the house, we drove too many people for too few seats. I laid across three people in the back. It was definitely the most...interesting way to get to know people.
"Hi, I'm Celinda, so nice to meet you. I hope I am not cutting your circulation off with my giant butt"
...
But, surprisingly, I had an amazing conversation with my backseat buddies (BSB. Man, I am GOOD). At the house, I had such fun talking to people. I seriously laughed so hard, my stomach hurt.

When we got back, we had Playfair. There are very few words that describe Playfair. The words zany, crazy, fun, different, and unique come to mind. Basically, it's like speed greet and random activities thrown together. One time, we had to find as many people born in our birth month and say hi as we could. We had 52 seconds. The closing activity was so much fun! Everyone paired up, and you played rock, paper, scissors. Whoever won was the victor and would find another challenger, and the loser would become the fan, chanting the person's name. At the end, there were two people, being carried on shoulders, battling it out, while the room shook with chants. The victor of that got most of the freshmen class chanting their name. He is also badass. At least, that's what I decided.

After that, there were scheduled activities all across campus. I went to the karaoke/dance party, with candy and t-shirt decorating. Me and my suite mates had so much fun dancing together and laughing. It hit me that I was in college, and HOW COOL IS THAT GUYS!!

Needless to say, I went to bed my first night full of excitement, and joy, and happiness, and eagerness for the future. When I woke up though, on my first full day, I had a very different feeling. That will be another blog though.

GO KNOX!
Celinda :]
